Basilicia de Nuestra Senora Del Pilar

This incredible structure dominates the huge square Plaza Del Pilar and is the first stop on any tour of the city. The exterior is awe inspiring with it’s brightly coloured tiled domes, and the interior does not disappoint either and the frescos by Goya, Gonzalez, Valazquez and Bayeau are a delight.

On show at the museum are ‘The Virgins Jewels’ among other exhibits. There is also an elevator to the top of one of the towers that commands a fine view.

Also in the main square is a marble and glass cube that marks the entrance of the underground ruins of the old city. Visitors are welcome to watch the short movie (Its commentary is in Spanish, but you get the drift anyway) that gives one the areas history. There is evidence of shops, houses and the sewage works.

Palacio de la Aljaferia

C Aliaferia, The remains of a Moorish fortress and principal relic of the time when Spain was divided into Tafia states. This double story building is impressive inside and out. Although it has been renovated since first built in the 8th century, it must have been some fortress in its heyday. You can see the Moorish influence on the ground floor, and the first floor is more Gothic. The tower was the inspiration for Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore.
