Armorique Nature Reserve

This well known nature reserve is located on the island of Ushant to the west of the town. This fine reserve can be reached via a ferry from Brest harbour. The nature trails in this 60,000 hectare park are well defined and offer forested walks, mountain scenery and lovely sea views. www.parc-naturel-armorique.fr

Le Musee de la Tour Tanguy

This well known landmark is also called Tanguy Tower. The museum depicts the city of Brest just before the second world war in a series of well constructed dioramas. This is a good one for a rainy day (There are plenty of those here) and will take about an hour. Admission is free of charge.

Musee de la Marine de Brest

Situated in the Chateau de Brest, which is one of the few buildings that survived WWII.

The interesting museum traces the proud maritime history of the area. The building itself is an impressive castle like structure with its 2 round stone towers guarding the entrance.

On perminant show is a fine collection of French seamanship from the earliest times and there are many temporary exhibits always.

Brest Castle

Located in the harbour and one of the most impressive sights of the town. The 15th century castle has seen action right up to the second world war and is in a good condition considering the town was hard hit then. The ramparts offer good harbour views and one can see why it's in such a strategic position. Looks great at night when lit up with the light shimmering off the sea.

Brest Canal

A very popular pastime in the area is to hire a boat and explore the canals that criss cross Brittany from here. The whole canal is 360 kms long and has 237 locks, so there is plenty to do and see messing about on these waterways. There are lots of interesting little villages on the banks and it's a beautiful area for a break even if you don't have a boat, there are walking and cycling tracks beside the water.
