| Altura has a gorgeous beach that stretches along the eastern Algarvian coastline where there is an excellent choice of local restaurants, bars and cafes.
Altura also offers a good chaice of shopping facilities, supermarkets and banks.
There is a daily market, typical of Portuguese life, where you will find fresh fish and quality local produce.
East of Altura, is the attractive town of Monte Gordo, one of the most popular tourist destinations which has excellent shopping facilities, good bars and restaurants, lively nightlife and a busy casino.
This lively resort has a brand new marina with a beach that is one of the best in the Algarve with warm, safe waters and luxurious expanses of white sand.
Further East of Villa Real de Santo Antonio, you can drive over the bridge or take the ferry to Ayamonte, the gateway to Spain.
Ayamonte is a pretty Spanish fishing port with a beautiful old quarter that is typical of Spanish town life with some great tapas bars and restaurants, along with some excellent markets.
West of Altura are the destinations Cacela Velha, Cabanas and Tavira.
Cacela Velha is a small coastal hamlet situated on cliffs overlooking the Ria Formosa nature park and the Atlantic ocean, reached via a landscape of fields and olive trees. It is uniquely pretty and bypassed by tourism.
Immaculate blue and white fishermens’ houses cluster around the remains of an 18th century fort and a whitewashed 13th century church. Caclea Velha is well known for its clams and cockles, which are harvested nearby at low tide. Every 3rd Sunday of the month there is large street market and fayre selling a variety of goods.
One ‘must have’ experience would be a visit to the waterfalls en route to Cachopo, North of Tavira, where surrounded by amazing scenery, you can swim in the emerald waters. |
