Welcome to Il Colle di Sotto!
In the countryside of Montelupo Fiorentino, a town in the immediate outskirts of Florence and so famous for its ceramics that it’s called “The Town of Ceramics”, there’s a charming quaint Tuscan construction surrounded by olives and secular cypress trees.
“Il Colle di Sotto” is a renovated independent barn of 100 meters, with a 360° panorama from a green and quiet hill, opening directly over spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside.
“Il Colle di Sotto” is the ideal place for anyone who desires to unite art, history and relaxation in the sweet nature of Tuscany.
“Il Colle di Sotto” can sleep up six people and it is composed of a luminous, multicoloured and fully equipped kitchen with the latest mod cons, two double bedrooms with double antique iron beds and two bathrooms with cabin shower. Upstairs there is an open-plan upper-gallery with a large sitting room with two sofa (one is a sofa bed for two people), equipped with Satellite TV, DVD player, stereo with CD player, free ADSL internet connection, books, a fireplace with firewood and an antique Tuscan chest of drawers.
The original architectural details have been preserved and incorporated into a new, elegant and comfortable design. The barn has been restructured using traditional materials: local stone, exposed wooden beams and Florentine terracotta floors, giving a touch of simple elegance.
Here and there, you will find precious detail such as fine paintings, ceramics from Montelupo and typical ornaments in character with the building.
Outside there is a spacious luminous veranda, equipped with chairs, deckchairs and a table, where is possible to sun-bathe and to have splendid open air breakfasts or romantic suppers, and where our guests can relax anytime they want with a unique, peaceful and suggestive view.
The wonderful swimming pool (10,5x7,5 mt.) with Jacuzzi pool, furnished with sun beds, reclining armchairs, table and chairs is surrounded by lawns and landscaped gardens framed by the rolling wooded hills beyond, is a lovely spot to relax and have a cooling dip.
It has been built near the olive grove away from any splashing sound that may be created for those who prefer to enjoy the calmness of the Tuscan countryside.
Use of the pool is reserved for guests renting Il Colle di Sotto and the owners who live in the house near.
The structure is equipped with heating, ceiling ventilator, fast internet connection, washing machine, iron with ironing board, safe, alarm system, bycicles renting service, first aid box, mobile phone with pre-paid phone card, hair-drier, automatic gate, free car parking space and a spacious independent garden.
“Il Colle di Sotto” is situated in an exceptionally beautiful part of Chianti-shire, above the Arno valley and about 230 metres above sea level.
It is within easy reach of the most famous Tuscan cities: only 20 minutes from Florence, only 10 minutes from Vinci and San Miniato, 30 minutes from Pisa, 50 minutes from Siena, Volterra, Monteriggioni, San Gimignano.
The barn is open all year round!

Montelupo Fiorentino is 25 km from the city seat of Florence and is located in an area of the Arno, beyond the south-western hills of Florence, where the land flattens to the sea and where the Arno joins the Pesa river valley. Along an important automotive and rail passageway between Florence, Pisa and Siena, and the gateway to the Empoli, Montelupo has maintained an excellent relationship with its natural surroundings. The town faces the cultivated countryside, rich in woodland, vineyards and the lush verdant scenery of a Tuscany, uncontaminated by massive urban settlements.
It comprises an area of 24.60 sq km and, together with Capraia and Limite, Cerreto Guidi, Empoli and Vinci makes up the “Terre del Rinascimento” (Renaissance Lands), an itinerary rich in history, art and nature, evidence of the Florentine Renaissance.
A short history:
The territory of Montelupo Fiorentino, represented a sort of communication link between central and southern Tuscany and the Apennines for ancient populations, due to its geographical position. The surrounding area played an important role in pre-Etruscan and Etruscan population, centred in the nearby towns of Artimino and Montereggi. The Roman colonization studded the area with many rustic villas, evidenced in the remains of locally produced amphora, and it produced a very valued wine. With the construction of the Castle of Montelupo, probably at the end of the Early Middle Ages, and above all the presence of the Florentine Republic, which substantially enlarged the inhabited area of the town, the workmanship of enamelled ceramic majolica become the most important activity.
Not to be missed:
The priory of S. Giovanni Evangelista: built around 1326, preserves interesting works of art, among which is a particular plate depicting a “Madonna with Child among the Saints” of the Botticelli school. The Archaeological and Ceramic Museum: contains a collection of interest and is set up on two themes: the archaeology of the territory and the history of ceramic in Montelupo. The archaeological part documents over twenty years of excavation and research, thanks to which, one of the most important collections of Prehistoric art in Tuscany has been formed in Montelupo. The sector dedicated to ceramics demonstrates the presence of this production in Montelupo since its origins (late 13th century) until modern times. The Oratory of the Holy Spirit: is of antique foundation. The Ambrogiana Villa: was built at the end of the 1500’s by desire of Ferdinand I dei Medici on the left bank of the Arno. The Villa, along with Poggio a Caiano and Artimino, is one of the places chosen by the Medici family for hunting and relaxation. At present, it is the seat of the Psychiatric Judicial Hospital. The Priory of San Lorenzo: built in the 13th century on the site of the Fortress of the 1200’s, preserves two important frescoes of 1284 by Corso di Buono. The Roman Villa of Pulica – hamlet of Pulica: in the locality of the Virgilio farm, an excavation brought to light buildings of the Roman era traceable to a rustic villa dating back to 80 and 60 b.c.. |
