Step into the past
Taking only 1 ½ hours from the port of Pireus to reach Hydra via high speed ferries, if you are like most people and are visiting Greece for a limited time but wish to experience one of her islands as well as traditional Greek architecture, then staying at The Heritage Home on the Island of Hydra then is sure to far than satisfy your desire.
For over 60 years, Hydra has long been the island of choice among the cosmopolitan, artists and travellers alike. Noted for the many glorious 18th century villas which make up the amphitheatre of its harbour town, Hydra is the most popular of the Saronic islands, and one of the most visited islands of Greece. Being one of the few places in the world where no cars or motorbikes are allowed, many donkeys and water taxis are available for transportation.
The Hyrda Island Heritage home is one of the magnificent 200 year old stone villas which adorn the dockside town. Located less than 70 meters from the port, nestled within the excitement and spice of Hydra’s historic nuance, living in this regal, yet delicate villa with it’s solid stone walls, hand painted floor tiles, carved marble sinks, and wooden carved ceilings returns you to the heart of old time Hydra.
Hydra Island
Having become a become a major naval power in the 18th century, Hydra played a critical role in the War of independence in 1821. Many wealthy ship owners and naval officers built luxurous, stone manors and villas along the island’s harbour.
The wealth of the local shipowners was reflected in their stately mansions, which can be seen in the remarkably well preserved town.
Built upon the sides of the large rock, the island of Hydra essentially is, the town of Hydra encircles the harbour. Narrow, alleys create an intricate network of picturesque passages connecting cafes, shops, restaurants and homes in graphic quaintness.
Hydra is famous for it’s nightlife. There are many bars and restaurants which attract visitors from around the world. It is also one of the most favourite “get away” areas for Greek and international stars alike, thus it’s fame as Europe’s “Cosmopolitan Island”.
Since there are no cars or motorbikes allowed on Hydra, it is one of the few islands which remains unaffected by modern day noise and air pollution. Taxi boats are available regularly to take swimmers on a quick trip to Agios Nicholaos and Mpisti beach on the other side of the island.
There are small beach areas located outside the main town of Hydra. Mainly, platforms have been created along the rocky cost in order to allow one the freedom to bathe easily within the cool, blue waters of this island.
The Hydra Heritage Home Standing in front of the house one is greeted by two large wooden doors with antique locks as well as a brass-hand doorknocker. Open the door and step into the parlour area. Around and across from you are beautiful, nude stone walls and arches.
One arch frames the stone staircase leading up to the main floor of the home. To your right, another arch leads off to a bedroom as well as a bathroom. Outside the bedroom, the original stone, oven stands as it did back in the 1800’s.
Further off to the left of the oven is the doorway to the large, sunny private garden area which is also enclosed with stone walls.
The bedroom on the ground floor boasts the original, naked wood-beam ceilings as well as a window looking out to the garden.
Going back into the parlor area, under the first arch and up the stone stairway… one gets the impression they have gone back in time.
The staircase leads up to an inner courtyard area of which the upper level of the home is built around in stone.
Traditionally, Greek aristocracy loved this private area as it allowed them to enjoy the warm sun as well as their noon meals under the open skies… but in complete privacy.
You have your choice of three doors to enter into the upper level of the home from the inner courtyard. The first door to the left, leads to the quaint country kitchen. The main double wooden doors to the formal living room, and the last door, on your right, to a hall.
From the kitchen, a wooden staircase leads up to the roof terrace… the perfect place to sit and enjoy the view of the sea and surrounding mountains.
The attention to detail is exquisite. The Heritage Home is decorated with only the finest of antiques. This is appropriate as the character of the home with its hand painted floor tiles, carved wooden ceilings and marble sinks… surely deserves the utmost of attention.
If you wish to experience authentic 18th century Greece, I highly, highly recommend staying here… not only because of the Heritage of the home and its tasteful décor and antiques… but also because, by not allowing any motor vehicles, the island of Hydra is one of the few places in Europe which has retained its original “old time” ambiance.
