Cartagena was recentely named by Frommers as one of 9 destinations to visit in 2009. Although Colombia has gotten a bad rap throughout the years, Cartagena, Colombia is one of the safest cities in South America. Perched atop South America on the southern rim of the Caribbean Sea, The port city has been called "One of the World's Best Kept Secrets" as well as "The Caribbean Jewel" by travel experts. Cobbled streets, balconies with blooming bougainvillea, and pastel plazas make Cartagena one of Latin America's most photogenic cities. But it's not just another pretty seaport. Founded in 1533, this Spanish-Colonial city is steeped in history. The former hub of the Spanish empire â a major shipping port for New World riches, and a slave market and Inquisition center â is surrounded by massive stone walls, within which sit hundreds of gorgeous colonial homes, churches, plazas and parks.
Cartagena is historic, beautiful, and safe, but you still may be asking yourself, Why is ToursGoneWild offering this city??? Cartagena is the Party Capital of Colombia during High Season, which is when everyone in Colombia is on holiday or has a long weekend (Dec/Jan/Apr/Jun/Jul/Nov). It is the favorite place for Colombia's young jettsetters who are looking to party hard and relax on the beach. Some of the hottest clubs from Bogota, Medellin, and Cali (Colombia's 3 biggest cities) close and open venues in Cartagena during high season. The city erupts with non-stop nightlife, beach parties, and most importantly beautiful, friendly people.
