Small groups, personalized attention.
Itinerary
Day 1
Grab hiking boots, your yoga mat and a good novel and join us on this unique journey in the mountains of Asturias, in Northern Spain! Each day will begin with a yoga class, followed by hearty breakfast prepared by your hosts Juan Carlos and Judy. Pack your small daypack and away we go! We will follow local hiking trails along established footpaths, ancient trade routes, through narrow canyons, and into the lake district of Somiedo National Park. Plan to hike approximately 10 to 15 kilometers per day,
Yoga classes will be offered every morning before breakfast and in the evenings after our hike.
Spanish Steps will meet you in Oviedo at 5PM.
Our first stop is only minutes from downtown Oviedo. It is the site of two ninth century, pre-Romanico churches that have been declared World Heritage sites by UNESCO. Located on the slopes of Mount Naranco both churches were built by King Ramiro I. Santa Maria del Naranco was built as a palace and later converted to a church, while San Miguel de Lillo, with its lovely arches and intricate sculptors, was built in homage to the Archangel Michael. We will then head south through the Trubia river valley basin in the Ubinas Mountains, part of the massive Cordillera Cantábrica Mountan range. There we will walk along part of the Senda del Oso (Bear Trail), a 30-kilometer footpath recently converted from rail tracks into Via Verdes, or Greenways, for the pleasure of walking in nature. The Casa Rural de Fuentes de Lucia, a recently converted farmhouse, in the hamlet of Faedo, will be our home for the week. It is set on a hillside of this lovely, green valley. Before dinner, your yoga instructor will conduct a 1-hour yoga class.
Day 2
Start your date with an invigorating yoga class. After breakfasta short drive takes us to the hamlet of Riocabo where we begin our walk. Narrow cow paths will lead us through several villages until we reach our home, Fuentes de Lucia. 15 âkilometers of moderate hilly terrain â mainly cow paths and country roads connecting small villages
Day 3
This morning, after yoga, we'll drive to the town of Villanueva and follow a route up and into El Desfiladero de Las Xanas. A well-planned path hugging the sides of this canyon will take us to the hamlet of Pedrobayo where we'll feast on a lunch of the famous Asturian bean stew, Pote Asturiana. After lunch, additional kilometers of hiking will be available for those who wish to walk the Senda del Osa. 10+ kilometers of canyon footpath â moderate hill.
Day 4
A 1-hour drive will take us into the heart of Somiedo National Park, a seldom-visited park sharing its border with Castilla y Leon. The complete isolation of this area makes it seem as if time were actually standing still. A diverse landscape of flora and fauna is why this area was declared a natural park in 1988 and it is recognized today as a wildlife reserve for its environmental variety and preservation of tradition. We hike a gentle mountain trails up to the Los Lagos.
Day 5
From Fuentes de Lucia in Faedo, we'll visit a group of molinos (grain mills) set beside a small river and surrounded by ancient chestnut trees. From there, we'll drop down into the Quiros River Valley once again, and follow the Senda del Oso to the town of Las Agueras.
Day 6
We'll get an early start today and travel 1-hour to the Cantabrian coast. We'll follow a 5-kilometer footpath hugging the sea and visit the small fishing village of Cudillero. After a tasty lunch of fish down by the port, we'll head into Ovideo, the capital of Asturias. We will have plenty of time to shop, photograph the sights or just take it all in from one of the many cafes that line the streets of this medieval university town. Be sure to visit the Cathedral and Museo de Bellas Artes.
Day 7
Today's walk will be in the Consejo of Terverga, the next valley over from the Quiros River Valley. We'll drive up to an area called Puerto de Marabio, a high point with spectular vistas of the valley and looking south toward Castilla y Leon and to the pass of Puerto de Ventana. The trail will be on and off road today through cow and horse grazing pastures.
Day 8
After our final morning class of yoga and breakfast, Spanish Steps will drive you back to Oviedo.
