| Day 1 - After your arrival at the airport, you will be escorted to your hotel. If you wish, and time is adequate, a walk around the city can be arranged. In the evening, a welcome dinner will help knowing each other. | | Day 2 - In the morning we will visit the magnificent Thessaloniki Byzantine Culture Museum, with unique religious exhibits.
We will then travel south, passing right below Mt. Olympus. We will stop at Livadi for a snack. We can visit the three churches of the village (Koimisi tis Theotokou, Agios Konstantinos and Agioi Anargiroi build in 1886, 1884 and 1760) which have impressive wooden iconostasis older than the churches and a small chapel just outside the village build around 1040. Then at Dolochi, a small, insignificant village near by, we will visit the beautiful church tis Metamorfoseos build in 1212 with paintings of 1512. Our next stop will be at Elassona and the 13th century monastery of Panagia Olympiotissa and from there we will continue passing Tirnavos and Trikala. At Pili we will visit Porta Panagia, a Byzantine church build on the top of an ancient temple with stones from the ancient building! The church was built in 1283 but most of its paintings were destroyed in a fire in 1855. However 2 tiled Byzantine pictures of 1283 are saved!
From here it is less than an hour drive to our final destination through dense forest and spectacular views. | | Day 3 - After a great breakfast with local products we will head for the famous monasteries of Meteora. We will make a stop to admire the architecture of Monastery of Doliana with the 13 domes. At Meteora we will have the rest of the morning available for one monastery in order to enjoy your visit to the maximum. We will visit Kalambaka for lunch and a walk before we return to the impressive rocks and an afternoon dedicated in another monastery. | | Day 4 - In the morning we will visit some traditional settlements: Sirako and Kalarites are stone-build and very well preserved, as no vehicles enter the settlements! In the area we will also visit the inimitable monastery of Kipina high on a vertical cliff.
On our way there, we will make brief stops at Anthousa and Haliki (also traditional settlements) and some churches and monasteries of the area: Agioi Pantes (1730 with a wooden temple), Profitis Ilias (1835) and the excellently preserved monastery of Panagia Galaktoforousa (1799).
We will then return at the hotel for a rest and in the afternoon we will visit Meteora to continue our visits to the monasteries. | | Day 5 - After breakfast we will leave for Ioannina. Through Katara Pass we will first reach Metsovo, build on a high slope, with charming style, and well known for wood-working, weaving and embroidery craftworks. The other two famous products of Metsovo are cheese and local wine.
Ioannina is a lovely town, with many monuments (amongst other we can visit Ali Pasas house) and ideal for an afternoon walk by the lake under huge plane trees.
It is also a very alive city with many cafes and bars, and has a great tradition in hand-made silver jewelry. | | Day 6 - This day is also dedicated to Meteora and the last two monasteries.
Furthermore, we will visit the Koimisi tis Theotokou church in Kalambaka; build in the 12th century on the remains of an older Basilica. Most of the paintings are from 1573 but in some points the original paintings are preserved together with parts of the tiled floor of the older Basilica!
Another important monument is the small church of Theotokou Doupianis. It was build around 1200 from the first hermits in the area, before the monasteries on the rocks. Although it was rebuilt in 1861 the original paintings are saved!! | | Day 7 - You will have all morning free to relax or take part in activities, as we will depart for Thessaloniki around noon. We will pass once again from Meteora, and then through Grevena we will arrive at Veroia. Here you will have time to visit some of the 48 Byzantine churches of the city before we continue to Thessaloniki witch is less than an hour drive away. | | Day 8 - We have not scheduled any activity for your last day, and you can spend your time in the city, before we transport you to the airport. |
