ITINERARY
Day 1 - Vienna Individual arrival at Vienna Airport. Meeting with the CzechWalking guides at the hotel at 6 p.m., dinner and general information on the tour. Overnight in Vienna.
Day 2 - Lednice, Valtice After breakfast, a scenic drive through a gently rolling landscape of the Lower Austria covered with the curving lines of vineyards, followed by a walk through the peaceful woods of the UNESCO-listed Lednice-Valtice complex, covering a large area between two grand châteaux. The man-made landscape, abounding in romantic vistas, is dotted with architectural follies (pavilions, temples and gazeboes) built here by the Liechtenstein family. The walk concludes in the Empire-style Border Château in Hlohovec, where we stay overnight.
Day 3 - White Carpathians Morning drive to the nearby White Carpathian Mountains and walk through its fragrant meadows with a variety of orchids, lilies and irises, shaded by ancient oaks. A tour of the open-air museum in Straznice with its picturesque wooden cottages, old wine cellars, barns, granaries, and tools used by our ancestors. In the evening, we will enjoy a wine tasting in a stylish wine cellar in nearby Mikulov, entertained by a traditional dulcimer band. Overnight in Hlohovec.
Day 4 - Podyji National Park An hour's walk in the gardens of the Neo-Gothic palace in Lednice with artificial lakes, exotic trees, and herons and storks flying overhead. Transfer to the Podyji National Park; here we will ascend the ruins of a once proud castle, learn about its colorful history and enjoy the spectacular views of the meandering Dyje River snaking its way through the gorge below. Later, a talk on the recent Communist past of the Czech Republic at the remnants of the Iron Curtain, then a drive to Telc.
Day 5 - Telc and Trebon Spend the morning in Telc, a picture-perfect sleepy town boasting a long Renaissance square lined with spectacular gabled houses. A guided tour of the local château with its chambers displaying furniture, chinaware, armor, and hunting trophies. Transfer to the Trebon Basin followed by an easy walk around Rozmberk, the largest of more than 500 artificial lakes in the area. A short transfer to Trebon, a delightful old town synonymous with the Czech fishing industry. Optionally, walk around the Svet Lake to the nearby Schwarzenberg Tomb, or a refreshing glass of unpasteurized beer in the local brewery, founded in 1379. Transfer and overnight in Cesky Krumlov.
Day 6 - Cesky Krumlov Cesky Krumlov, a true jewel among Renaissance towns, is protected by UNESCO for its unique medieval character, winding narrow streets and large number of well-preserved buildings. In the morning, we will take a guided tour of the extensive castle (the second largest in the country), followed by a visit to its truly unique Baroque theater. Afternoon at leisure; however, those who prefer to stay physically active can opt to climb a nearby hill and be rewarded with a beautiful view of the town below. Overnight in Cesky Krumlov.
Day 7 - Sumava National Park We bid farewell to South Bohemia in Tabor, where the fearless Hussites wrote an eventful chapter of Czech and European history. Afternoon arrival in Prague, the "City of a Hundred Spires," a romantic, yet lively and cosmopolitan metropolis. A city tour will cover all the A-list sights, including the Prague Castle, St. Nicholas Cathedral, Charles Bridge, and Old Town Square with its astronomical clock. Our farewell dinner will take place at a restaurant with fabulous views of the city, lying literally at your feet. Overnight in Prague.
Day 8 - Prague The tour ends. Transfer to the airport for your home-bound flight or spend a couple of extra days in Prague.
