Itinerary

Day 1

March 30th-Upon arrival in San Jose, you will be met and escorted to the Bougainvillea Hotel. No meals are included.

Day 2

Marh 31st-
After breakfast depart by bus for the Cano Negro dock for the private boat trip to Tortuguero. In the afternoon visit the Caribbean Conservation Corporation and learn about sea turtle research with time to visit the tiny village of Tortuguero. BLD

Day 3

April 1st-
During the next two days you will have many opportunities to photograph the wildlife in the area. In the morning take a boat trip through the canals of Tortuguero National Park to photograph birds and caimans. This afternoon we have plenty of time for bird and nature photography on the grounds around the lodge. After dinner take a hike to find red-eyed tree frogs. BLD

Day 4

April 2nd-
Same as Day 3

Day 5

April 3rd-
After breakfast, say farewell to Tortuguero and return by boat to the dock where our driver and bus will meet us for the trip to Arenal. Lunch at a local restaurant enroute. Time on arrival to relax and photograph at the lodge.

Day 6

April 4th-
Up early this morning for sunrise photos of Arenal Volcano and birds in the area. After breakfast we travel to the Zoologico Serpentino in the village of El Castillo. Here we have a chance to photograph eyelash vipers, tree frogs and birds. Then we continue to La Fortuna for lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to Danaus Eco Center. Informal discussion this evening on biodiversity conservation and ecotourism.

Day 7

April 5th-
Early morning free for bird photography. After breakfast depart for La Catarata Lodge to photography honeycreepers and tanagers. This afternoon we visit Arenal Hanging Bridges for lunch only, spending a little time in the parking lot for photography! In the afternoon we have free time to explore other areas or hike through Arenal National Park (at additional expense) for the closest view of this active volcano. BLD

Day 8

April 6th-
After a leisurely breakfast, depart for Savegre with stops along the way for great photography. One of those stops will be the town of Zarcero, where we visit the downtown church and central park, made famous by its wonderful topiaries. Lunch enroute. On arrival at Savegre, assemble the multiple flash set-ups near the hummingbird feeders to get the birds used to our equipment. We'll have many opportunities for great shots during our visit. Explore the lodge grounds this afternoon before dinner. BLD

Day 9

April 7th-
After an early breakfast cover some of the lower trails, looking for quetzals and other highland species. After lunch we travel by the
lodge's pickup truck to the upper cloud forest reserve to hike among towering tropical oak trees. BLD

Day 10

April 8th-
Morning hummingbird photography at the feeders. After lunch head out to visit the Trogon Lodge for afternoon photography on the lower trails. Also visit Miriam's House and Garden for photos of silky flycatchers and other bird species. BLD

Day 11

April 9th-

We take our time today savoring last minute photo opportunities at Savegre before heading to San José. This evening we will have a chance to photograph the lights of the city against the sunset, weather permitting, of course! BLD

Day 12

April 10th-
Early morning visit to Poas Volcano before the clouds roll in and then continue to La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We will spend most of the day photographing waterfalls, captive birds, butterflies and hummingbirds. Farewell dinner at the hotel this evening. BLD

Day 13

April 11th-
After breakfast, depart for the international airport and our flights home. B
