- Amarbayasgalant Monastery
The second most important monastery (after Erdenezuu in Karakorum), Amarbayasgalant was built in memory of Zanabazar, the Mongolia's first religious leader, from 1727 to 1736. Originally, the monastery had more than 40 temples, 28 temples of which have left from the Communist purges in the 1930s. The legend has it: 'When the founders were looking for a picturesque place to build the monastery, they met with two children pasturing their sheep and asked what their names were. As their names were Amar (peaceful) and Bayasgalan (cheerfulness), the founders decided to name the monastery Amarbayasgalant.
