Travel from Phnom Penh to Thailand by way of Cambodia's second largest city, Battambang. Visit the popular local market and go on a primitive bamboo train ride through the rural town.
Itinerary
Day 1
Phnom Penh to BattambangIn the morning, you'll be picked up and taken to your air-conditioned, comfortable bus for a ride along well maintained roads. Unlike most roads in Cambodia, the one your bus will be taking is paved. During the bus trip you'll pass small villages filled with children waving at the bus and houses built on poles surrounded by wild-looking trees. Time to turn on your Mp3 player and enjoy the scenes of Cambodian life passing by. This is a great way to pass the time during the 5-6 hour bus trip. At the end of the afternoon you'll reach Battambang. If you check-in and bring your baggage to your room quickly, you'll have time to do some sight-seeing in the city. Go for a ride on the traditional bamboo train and let the country rhythm of life win you over. Contrary to what you may expect, the bamboo train is nothing more than a bamboo raft, carriage and a small engine. Just stand by the side of the rails and hop on board; it's as easy as that. Battambang is a rural town with lively market that people from all around come to visit to stock up on food. You'll spend the night in a comfortable yet quite simplistic hotel across from the market.
Day 2
Battambang to BangkokYou'll leave Battambang early in the morning and head towards the Thai border. After a bumpy ride in a private car you'll reach the border after about a three-hour drive. After one last look over your shoulder at Cambodia, you'll cross over on foot. The border is nothing more than a gate and two small offices on both sides. A driver will be waiting at the Thai border to take you to Trat. The moment you set foot on Thai ground, you'll notice the difference with Cambodia. The sandy Cambodian roads will make way for the paved road to Trat.

Important Notice : Avoiding Fraud
It's rare, but some helpful hints to watch out for with regards to fraud:
- It is important to NEVER wire funds or use/employ other fund transfer mechanisms such as western union: Always use a credit card to protect yourself against fraud. If owners pressure you into providing a deposit or refuse to accept credit cards, there is a high probability that this is a scam.
- If at all suspicious of fraud, ask to see their website, or any other literature they can provide or send to you. Ask them for contact details for guests who have previously stayed on their property insisting on telephone numbers. Be suspicious of emails that originate from free email services (yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc)
- Research the property thoroughly on the internet to see if there is any history or mention of scams associated with the property.
