Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1: Ulan Bator / Karakorum

Leave for Harhorin (360km or 224 miles), where the remains of the 13-14th century capital of the Mongol Empire – Karakorum – stand. Picnic lunch on the way. Stay overnight here in an authentic Mongolian ger in the heart of Mongolia, which has served as the political, religious, cultural, and administrative center for Mongolian states for thousands of years.

Day 2

Day 2: Karakorum / Bayangobi

View remnants of Karakorum’s many civilizations and turbulent history and visit the Mongolia’s largest monastery of Erdenezuu, built in the 16th century and noted for its extraordinary collection of unparalleled Buddhist paintings, unusual religious objects made in the true Mongolian style, and a wealth of artworks completed by Mongolian artisans of the 16-20th centuries. Continue the tour towards Bayangobi camp. Lunch. Visit sand dunes. Dinner at the camp. Stay overnight in a ger.

Day 3

Day 3: Bayangobi / Ulan Bator

Return to Ulan Bator. En route, stop at Hogno Haan, a scenic mountain of historical significance. Visit the Erdene Hambiin Hiid, a functioning temple at Hogno Haan. Picnic lunch. Arrive in Ulan Bator late afternoon. Transfer to hotel.

Karakorum and Erdenezuu
Founded by Genghis Khan in the Orhon Valley at the crossroads of the Silk Route in 1220, Karakorum existed for more than 140 years. It was from there that the Mongol Empire was governed for 32 years until Kublai Khan moved it to Beijing. The first Buddhist Monastery in Mongolia, Erdenezuu was initiated by Abtai Sain Khan on the ruins of Karakorum. In 1792, it housed 62 temples and 10,000 lamas; since 1990, it has become an active monastery again. The monastery now boasts religious objects and musical instruments, Buddhists paintings and many other artworks created by Mongolian craftsmen in the 16-18th centuries.
