Megeve was the original swish resort, that attracted the ultra rich to be seen on and off piste. Its been overtaken in recent years by Courchevel 1850, but still enjoys a good smattering of wealthy visitors. The village is very much in the traditional style and contains a very good selection of shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs plus a casino.
The skiing offers a great variety for all levels of competence and snowboarders have their own park. The child care facilities at the resort are second to none.
Overall the resort is expensive for the average family, but if that's not a problem and you like a great time at night then come! |

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS |
|
Nearby Attractions: For the days off from skiing, there are plenty of options. The first is to investigate the lovely little shops that line the streets, but be prepared for the high prices.
There is an interesting farm museum which also outlines the local history in the Ruelle du Vieux Marche. If you are into bowling , then the popular alley would suit you, or how about a flutter at the casino? The fitness centre holds classes and you can do pottery there. |
| Aprés-Ski: When the night comes the town wakes up and loves to party. Plenty of choice for eating with over 90 restaurants, some on the mountain and hotels, over 20 bars to choose from and even 7 clubs to dance to live music or what the DJs dish up. A great place for the night owl. |

| The Epaule
- by Megeve Mike from France - 2006-08-03 |
| The most scenic views of Mont Blanc the highest mountain in Europe are visible from the top of the “Epaule” chairlift. At the top of this chair lift you will want to turn immediately left to stay on the piste, a right turn will take you immediately off piste! You should be a good intermediate skier to do this run, in several places it is quite narrow and in whiteout conditions not advised at all. However on a brilliant sunny day you will want to look around you and capture a visual picture that even the best of cameras could ever capture….the whole of the French Alps in all their beauty right before your eyes! After taking it all in, its time to ski all the way down to Chatrix, the longest of runs in the Megeve domain. |
| Everything Megeve
- by Megeve Mike from France - 2007-08-31 |
| It is still good to see that Americans are coming to Europe. I’m an American who teaches skiing in the French Alps and have been doing so since 1988. I often talk to my American clients and friends that fly into Geneva International Airport (GVA) from most any city off the East and West Coast of the US.
They tell me that it is less expensive (much cheaper), and takes less time to ski in the French Alps than to fly and then drive 3 hours to some of the better known resorts in Colorado and Utah. The flight is only 6 to 7 hours! A short 1 hour drive from Geneva will get you to Megeve and you’re on the ski slopes.
I have a Private Ski School " Ski Pros Megeve " in Megeve, France and can assure you that even with a dollar at $1.35 to the Euro;
1. The cost of lift passes are half what you would pay back home in the US.
2. Ski Equipment rental is less even for top of the line models.
3. Food on the hill is unique, has taste (tastes good) and at about $28. for two, including wine, won’t ruin you.
4. The hotels (at the bottom of the slopes and center of town) can be reserved for anywhere from $148. And up!
5. A taxi transfer from the airport to Megeve will cost about $160 per person or you can take a bus for a quarter of the cost and get to the same place, in the same amount of time.
6. People are super friendly and the atmosphere is like nothing back home.
7. Last but not least, private ski lessons are half the price that you would pay in the Rocky Mountains.
8. A good supper, (and plenty of it) at a good restaurant can start at $25. Including wine, desert and tips!
9. It is not just the price there is a lot more… it’s easy to get to also!
Megeve is at the foot of the Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Europe. Best thing I can suggest is to check it out I’m sure that you too will find out why Americans have always been coming to ski in these superb ski areas… and why they keep coming back to the French Alps.
