Top 10 Things in Venice on a Short Break

Alloggi Alla Scala - Hotel
Carnival posters cover the walls of these gorgeous rooms which are just as colorful and frilly. The hotel is located in a historic garden on the waters edge, so music from the gondals can be heard from the canal-side rooms.

Reservations are important as the hotel is in the tourist centre of Venice, just minutes from the Rialto and S. Marco. S. Marco, 4306 (Tel: 0415210629)

Bora Bora - Restaurant or Cafe
Don’t be confused by the strange Hawaiian décor, the food here is Venetian through and through. Large pizzas, with local specialities including Baccala and house originals like the zodiac pizzas, add to the great mix of locals and tourists at Bora Bora. S. Marco, 5251 (Tel: 0415236583)

Gondolas - Tourist Attraction
When thinking of Venice images of 2 lovers in a gondola floating through romantic Venice comes to mind, but at around L120,000 for a 50-minute ride they are very expensive. Although it is possible to fit up to 6 people into one gondola and still pay the same price. If you have any problems check with the local tourist office.

The Lido - Natural Attraction
East of the city centre, is this thin strip of land which separates Venice from the Adriatic. Once the most fashionable beach resort, today it is still very popular. Be warned though, in summer it is almost impossible to find a space on its long beach front. Accessible by vaporetto No’s 1,6,14 or 82.

Galleria dell’Accademia - Cutural Attraction
The fabulous Academy of Fine Arts is a temple containing an important collection of Venetian-school art. Among the other great works of art by Tintoretto, Titan and Bellini, is Veronese’s massive rendition of the Last Supper in Room X. The piece enraged the leaders of the Inquisition with its almost comicly improvisation, hence Veronese was forced to change the title to Supper in the House of Levi to avoid having to make costly changes at his own expense. Tel: 0415222247

Collezione Peggy Guggenheim - Tourist Attraction
Nearby the Galleria dell’Accademia is Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, once the home of the American heiress, it is now one of Venice’s most popular museums. The collection includes wonderful and diverse works by Bramcasi, Picasso, Rothko and Kandinsky – as well as works by Ms. Guggenheim’s daughter Pegeen. In the sculpture garden is where Ms Guggenheim and her 14 pet dogs are burried. Dorsoduro, 708 (Tel: 0415206288)

Palazzo Ducle - Cutural Attraction
Between the lagoon and S. Marco stands Doge’s Palace, the official residence of the Doges and the seat of republic’s government. The original 9th century palace which epitomizes Venetian Gothic Style, was later rebuilt and expanded in the 14th century after a devastating fire destroyed the original. Graceful arcades and light-colored stone combine to make the exterior seem airy and delicate, even for a massive structure. (Tel: 0415524951)

Ponte dei Sospiri - Tourist Attraction
Otherwise known as the Bridge of Sighs, it connects Palazza Ducale to the old prisons. The bridge owns its name to the mournful groans of prisoners thinking about the slim chance of them ever being granted their freedom. It evokes romantic images due to its association with Casanova, a native of Venice who was incarcerated in the prisons. He later went on to become a librarian.

Piazzo & Basilica di San Marco - Cutural Attraction
One of the most famous squares in the world, it was described as the finest drawing room in Europe, by Napoleon. It’s a gathering place for thousands of tourists and also functions as a crossroads of transportation, as water and land traffic merge at the Riva degli Schiavoni. Don’t miss the beautiful Pala d’Orgo, a gold altar piece decorated with silver, enamel and precious stones, behind the Basilica’s altar.

Paradiso Perduto - Bar or Club
This dark, young and hip bar, jazz club and restaurant is known among the locals. Listen to live jazz and salsa while sitting outdoors by the canal.

Typical Venetian fish dishes are served here. Fondamenta della Misericordia, 2540 (Tel: 041720581)
