| The fabulous Academy of Fine Arts is a temple containing an important collection of Venetian-school art. Among the other great works of art by Tintoretto, Titan and Bellini, is Veronese’s massive rendition of the Last Supper in Room X. The piece enraged the leaders of the Inquisition with its almost comicly improvisation, hence Veronese was forced to change the title to Supper in the House of Levi to avoid having to make costly changes at his own expense. | Nearby the Galleria dell’Accademia is Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, once the home of the American heiress, it is now one of Venice’s most popular museums. The collection includes wonderful and diverse works by Bramcasi, Picasso, Rothko and Kandinsky – as well as works by Ms. Guggenheim’s daughter Pegeen. | Between the lagoon and S. Marco stands Doge’s Palace, the official residence of the Doges and the seat of republic’s government. The original 9th century palace which epitomizes Venetian Gothic Style, was later rebuilt and expanded in the 14th century after a devastating fire destroyed the original. | Otherwise known as the Bridge of Sighs, it connects Palazza Ducale to the old prisons. The bridge owns its name to the mournful groans of prisoners thinking about the slim chance of them ever being granted their freedom. It evokes romantic images due to its association with Casanova, a native of Venice who was incarcerated in the prisons. He later went on to become a librarian. |
