Ever since Christian's parents saw pictures of our Bryce Canyon trip back in 2001 they have wanted to visit this exceptionally beautiful National Park too. Our first attempt in December 2002 failed due to treacherous road conditions. We had to turn around a couple of miles after Cedar City due to a heavy snowstorm. So after an excellent breakfast at the Paris Las Vegas we loaded up our SUV and headed north-east towards Zion National Park and on to Bryce Canyon. We arrived at our hotel, the Best Western Ruby's Inn, which is located right at the park entrance, at around 7pm.
Friday, June 11, 2004 - We started the day with having breakfast at the Ruby's Inn buffet. Then we checked out of the hotel and drove into the park. Bryce Canyon is one magical place. You cannot describe the beauty of that area with words. The colours, the shapes, everything is out of the ordinary. You have to see it for yourself. We found Bryce Canyon even more spectacular then Grand Canyon, which we visited back in the year 2000.
Bryce Canyon is famous for its unique geology, consisting of a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters. Erosional forces have shaped colorful limestone rock into bizarre shapes including slot canyons, windows, fins, and spires called "hoodoos." Tinted with colors too numerous to name, these whimsically arranged rocks create a wondrous landscape of mazes, offering some of the most exciting and memorable walks and hikes imaginable.
Bryce Canyon National Park boasts some of the world's best air quality, offering panoramic views of three states and approaching 200 miles of visibility. This, coupled with the lack of nearby large light sources, creates unparalleled opportunities for stargazing.
Late afternoon we hit the road back to Las Vegas - this time not through Zion National Park, but instead we took UT-14, the road we tried to drive in winter 2002. And it was a good decision not trying to drive on this winding mountain route in the darkness during a snowstorm, with road-signs saying "Snow Plowing only during Daylight Hours". But this time we could enjoy the scenery - it was a really nice drive. It was still daylight when we arrived back in Las Vegas. |
