Spartanburg Local History

Spartanburg was named after the Spartan Rifles, a Revolutionary War militia unit that served at the crucial Battle of Cowpens. The heavily industrialised Spartanburg was incorporated and founded in 1831. Today, this growing community is the headquarters of more than 40 corporations, including Milliken, the world's largest privately owned company.

Textiles are the foundation here, but diversification has come over the past two decades, with the influx of nearly 90 firms representing 15 foreign countries. The area is also known for its peaches; some publications tout it as being the "Fresh Peach Capital of the South."

Hollywild Animal Park - 2325 Hampton Rd, Wellford, SC Tel (864) 472 2038. The park is the home to more than 500 exotic and native animals, some of which roam freely inside large natural enclosures or on manmade islands. You can feed and have close contact with dozens of the inhabitants. A safari ride is offered through the Outback area which is 70 acres filled with herds of free-roaming animals. You will see turtles sunning on logs by the pond or babies hidden in the woods. Many of the residents are famous in their own right, having been featured in numerous movies and television shows. This very large 7,054 acre State Park features two lakes and offers a variety of recreational amenities and activities such as equestrian and hiking trails, stables and a horse show ring, camping facilities, fishing, a boat launch, a store, swimming pool, tennis courts, and picnic areas. The mission of Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is to be a place for the public to come for inspiration, enjoyment and education through the study of nature. Features of this 10-acre public garden include perennial and annual flower displays, natural areas and woodland gardens, native plants, ponds and lots of wildlife. Some favourites included are leg of lamb with sun dried tomato pesto, seared rare venison with chanterelle mushrooms in Port wine, sauteed rainbow trout with lemon butter and parsley, Black Angus ribeye with blue cheese port butter, and grilled mahi mahi, to name a few. Live entertainment offered is Jazz on Monday and Tuesday and a pianist on Wednesday through Saturday. Open for lunch Monday to Friday 11.30 am to 2.30 pm and for dinner Monday to Sunday 6 pm to closing.

This is the perfect place for casual family dining with a Kids Game Room and 16 TV's playing a wide variety of sporting events. Gooney Bird's is well known for it's Fried Dill Pickles and Creamy Crab Dip. They also have a large variety of appetizers, sandwiches, entrees and desserts on offer which will have you coming back for more. Specialty breakfast, bagels, freshly baked muffins, and hot cereals is offered in a coffee house atmosphere. This is one of only two places in downtown Spartanburg where you will find a choice of gourmet coffees and a coffee bar. They also have an extensive lunchtime sandwich selection to choose from. Here you'll find something for every taste and the menu offers dishes from Mediterranean to French to middle eastern. Their extensive wine selection is aptly stored in the bank's vault.
