Greensboro Local History

Settled by freedom loving Scots, Irish, Germans and Quakers, Greensboro was seceded from the Union in 1861 and became an important Confederate supply depot.

In more recent history; it was here in 1960 that a number of black college students protested against segregation by sitting down at a whites-only lunch counter and staying there until the city agreed to integrate the restaurants. The International Civil Rights Centre and Museum is situated here.
