Biloxi Local History

King Louis XIV believed that a more permanent stake should be made in the area near the mouth of the Mississippi, so Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d'lberville set sail from France in October 1698 and arrived at Biloxi Bay six months later. On the 8th of April 1699 the site of present day Ocean Springs was selected where the Fort Maurepas was built, which was the first settlement by the French.

Along Beach Boulevard there are several graceful, antebellum homes, which still remain as a reminder of a bygone era. There are several homes that are on display, including the Beauvoir, which was built in 1852 to 1854. Beauvoir is the retirement estate of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The cottage-style of the residence stands on 52 acres overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
