Minneapolis Travel Guide

Minneapolis Local History

The twin cities, Minneapolis and St Paul lie on either side of the Mississippi River. Both these cities are the focal point for riverboat traffic all the way up from New Orleans. The first settlers to Minneapolis were emigrants from New England in 1847.

Fort Snelling was constructed in the 1820's bringing with it more Europeans to the area to establish towns and businesses. One of these lucrative businesses was the flour milling industry, which gave Minneapolis its foundation as a major industrial city. The St Anthony Falls, named after the patron saint of the first known Europeans to see them, gave the milling industry the power it needed to turn the city into the flour milling capital of the world.

Minneapolis is famous for its miles and miles of climate controlled skyway systems, which enable both residents and visitors alike to do everything they need to do, from shopping to work and dining out without stepping outdoors into the harsh winters.
