Worcester Travel Guide
Worcester Local History
Worcester dates back to the 17th century when it was first settled in 1684. Numerous disputes with the local Nipmuc people caused the abandonment of Worcester on two occasions. The village became a town in 1722 and major development followed the opening of the Blackstone canal in 1828, when the town was linked to Providence.
In 1926, Robert Goddard, the grandfather of American rocketry launched the first liquid fueled rocket near here. Today the city has a flourishing biotech economy with numerous facilities doing work for companies around the country.
