Mt. Vernon Travel Guide
Mt. Vernon Local History
In 1837 one of Mount Vernon's first settlers arrived and built a cabin near the present Nature Park. One year later settlers began flocking to the land because it was officially for sale.
Mount Vernon originally known as "Hilltop", became known as Pinhook in 1847 after wooden pins were used in the stores to hang up the goods. 3 years later the area was once again re-named Mount Vernon to reflect the name of Washington's home.
The town was only incorporated in 1869 as a city with an elected government.
Mount Vernon is located in eastern Linn County and is known for its unique shopping district, exquisite historic homes and rolling hills. Mount Vernon is so small that its easy to walk where you want to be.
