Mt. Pleasant Local History

Mt.Pleasant was established in 1835 and during that same year the county government was organized, being one of eight in the Iowa District of the territory of Wisconsin. Mt. Pleasant is designated as the county seat of Henry County.

In 1851-1852 a first attempt was made to construct a "hard surface road" made out of wooden planks which was built from Burlington to Mt. Pleasant. In 4 years the planks were worn through due to the fact that people used heavy wagons.

Henry County is known for its excellent education system. Mt. Pleasant is known as the "Athens of Iowa". Iowa Wesleyan University/College is the oldest co-educational, Degree Granting Institution in Iowa which dates back to 1842.

This is where several women's rights issues were activated. Did you know? that in 1859, the first woman to graduate wiht a degree was Lucy Kilpatrick Byrkit. In 1885 the first African American woman to graduate was Susan Mosely Grandison.

Arabella Babb Mansfield, who was an Iowa Wesleyan Co-ed, was the first woman to pass the bar examination in the United States in 1869. During 1870 Mt. Pleasant was the first state to host the Women's Rights Convention.

Aquatic Center - This outing is for the young and old, experienced or befginner swimmers. There is a grassy area of 64 000sq ft where the entire family can have a picnic, Features of the pool are zero depth entry, six lane 25yd pool, 330 000 gallon of water, 17 000 sq ft of deck, a family changing area, handicapped accessibility, 2 diving boards (1and 3m), fountain and jets in the water, lockers in and outside, bathhouse, safe and adequate parking, heated water, shaded structure, concesssion area and 2 water slides. Whether you swim or not you need to have a pass.

Admmission prices are as follows, Daily: Age 0-3 free, 4-15 $2,50, 16 and up $3,00, passes individual $50,00 , family $100,00(2-5 members,$5,00 each additional member), ticket books- 10 tickets $22,00 (1 ticket per patron), 25 tickets $44,00. Mt. Pleasant Parks & Gardens

East Lake Park Situated on the east end of the town on Lexington avenue, one will find the 120 acre park. This is definitely an outing for the whole family. Facilities available are 3 field sofball complexes, 2 shelter houses, restrooms, picnic tables, a gazebo, 2 playground areas for the small children and much more. There is also a driving range and a horseshoe court.

Saunders Park Located in the heart of the city center next to the hospital you will find this 60 acre park. At the family quatic centre can be found, two shelter houses, play ground equipment and a log cabin.
