Canton Travel Guide
Canton Local History
Canton had its early beginnings as part of an Indian trade route into the Cherokee nation. This early frontier settlement was known as Etowah and was incorporated by action of the State Legislature in 1833.Two of the founding fathers had visions of the town becoming a silk centre, similar to that of Canton, China and that is why the name was changed to Canton in 1834.
It quickly became the commerical, educational and social centre of Cherokee County and was widely known for the high-quality denim produced by the Canton Textile Mills, established in 1899.With the closing of the mills in 1981,Canton survivied the transition from mill city to a city of prosperity and its natural beauty, set along the banks of the Etowah river and in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, make it worth a visit.
