Burlington Local History

The town of Burlington grew around the railway line of the Rock Island Railroad. Origionally the town only consisted of a few tents that were pitched about a mile west of the present site of the city, the tents where however moved when the railway line was built and the new town of Burlington started to flourish.

The town was incorporatd in May 1888 and named the county seat of the newly formed Kit Carson County.In the mid 1900's the Rock Island Railroad Company closed and the town became mainly agricultural.

Kit Carson County Carousel - origionally built in 1905, the carousel was sold to Kut Carson County in 1928 and has been a favourite with children and adults alike ever since. The carousel is beautifully decorated with murals and sculptures of animals and has been declared a National Landmark. Open 1pm to 6pm Memorial Day to Labour Day and a ride and tour costs 25 cents..

The Doll House - located in the Old Town the Doll House a is the favourite place for young girls as it features many lovely and unique dolls constructed from a number of materials from cloth to dough.

Burlington Parks & Gardens

Parmer Park - located at the south end of Mike Lounge Drive, the park is a great palce for a quiet picnic in one of the lovely shaded picnic areas. Other facilities in the park include playground equipment, barbeque facilities and restrooms.

Outback Territory Park - located at Martin Avenue and 15th street, the park also has shaded picnis areas and a new Outback Territory playground that is great for the kids as well as restroom facilities.

Amack's Chester Fried Chicken - located at 100 Rose Avenue, Exit 438. Delicious southern fried chicken and golden french fries that your waistline will hate but your taste buds will love.

Main Street Donut and Deli - located at 415 14th Street, Exit 347, 438. Main Street makes some of the best Doghnuts in Burlington with lots of different varieties available. This is also a great place to have a lunch with daily specials available and the deli has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

Park Palce Coffee Haus - located at 524 15th Street. A great European style coffee house serving great tea, soda's and big cups of coffee. There is also a good selection of mouthwatering pastries and cakes on offer to accompany your coffee.

Pizza Hut - located at 320 Lincoln Street, Exit 347. A classis American take out and diner, the Pizza Hut serves great pasta dishes, has a nice salad bar for vegetarians or the health conscious and their speciality is of course pizza'a which can be orderd with a variety of toppings on a thin or thick base.
