Mill Valley Travel Guide
Mill Valley Local History
Mill Valley is a little town, north of Sausalito and west of Highway 101, nestled on the lee side of Mt. Tamalpais. It was originally a logging town and takes its name from the 1836 sawmill that can still be seen among the trees in Old Mill Park. In the late 1800s, it was a vacation haven for San Francisco families.
In 1896, a mountain railway took visitors from the town center up to the summit of Mt. Tamalpais. It was discontinued in 1931, but the old depot still functions as a bookstore and café in Lytton Square. Lytton Square is the town center where you will find a bevy of coffee houses, restaurants and boutiques.
