Fayetteville Local History

The Osage Indians had hunting grounds in Northwest Arkansas long before the first white man appeared. In 1817 the Cherokees were given the Ozark Region by treaty. Frank Pierce, came to the White River for the first time in 1819. He was so impressed with the area that he returned later in 1828, and settled near the tree where he had spent the night, nine years earlier. In October, 1828, Washington County was established and Fayetteville was chosen as its capital.

In 1835 President Andrew Jackson issued patent for the land of original town, and Fayetteville was incorporated by Act of the first State Legislature, in 1836. Beginning in 1835, the town of Fayetteville was surveyed into lots, which were sold at public auctions during the following two years. George Freyschlag purchased the site where the City Administration Building now stands, for $131,000. In 1840 the first Fayetteville census showed a population of 425, and during the following year, 1841, the city of Fayetteville was incorporated. Since there was no official city hall, city business was transacted in the private store, office, or residence of the mayor. As each new mayor was elected, the location where city business was transacted moved to the new mayor's private business or home

In 1859 a City Charter was granted by the State Legislature, but by 1868, local citizens was apparently dissatisfied with city government, and asked the State Legislature to dissolve the City's Charter. Fayetteville was reorganized under a general statute, in 1870, and The County Court adopted an Order of Incorporation for the City. In 1885 Fayetteville became a City of "Second Class".
