Montgomery Local History

Montgomery is the capital city of Alabama and its position made it the natural political centre of the plantation elite which lead to its adoption as the state capital in 1846 and the temporary capital of the Confederacy in 1861. Although in Deep South country, it was home to the first successful mass civil rights activity in 1955 - 56.

The zoo houses over 600 different species of exotic wildlife in their natural habitat. The museum houses interactive life-like exhibits of naturally preserved animals and their natural habitats. The zoo also has a gift shop with a restaurant, which all make this a great place for the whole family to have a great time. The Lambert Fun Zone - Bowling, bumper cars, skating, video games and more at the Fun Zone.Try and play " Laser Q" - a game where you are "armed" with laser guns in a darkened maze.

WA Gayle Planetarium - Located in beautiful Oak Park, it hosts an auditorium designed especially for simulating the natural sky by projecting images of the sun, moon, planets and stars on a 50ft domed ceiling.

Blount Cultural Park - 6055 Vaughn Road. This beautiful oasis is found near the centre of the city, and it is a great place to relax and take a break from the busy city life. The park has beautiful trees; flowers; sculptures; a wood and stone bridge; and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. Admission to the park is free of charge.
