Cancun Local History
Although the Cancun of today is only twenty-five years old, the area is steeped in history.
The ancient Maya built a burial sight between 1200 and 1500 A.D., which can still be seen today near the hotel zone. After the Mayas civilisation peaked, they left the area for less hostile places.
In 1841, explorer John L. Stephens conducted extensive local explorations of the area.
1967 saw the area of Cancun being turned from a crumbling coconut plantation into the thriving holiday resort it is today.
