Top Local Tips for Montevideo

Buquebus from Buenos Aires If you are coming to Montevideo from Buenos Aires, I hightly recommend the Buquebus - elegent ferry boats that take you across the river in comfort and style. Three hours direct to Montevideo or one hour to Colonia and first class bus (2 hours) to Montevideo. Tourist class is way more comfortable than an airline, and is fine - first class is even better. Smooth and very comfortable.

Buquebus The ferry arrives at the port several times a day and the walk to the hotel is thru the Old Town section of Montevideo. If the weather is good and your luggage is manageable, you can simply walk to the hotel on the Plaza.

Baar Fun Fun There's a place called Baar Fun Fun which is just a couple of minutes away from the hotel, down by the side of the Teatro Solis. Get a taxi, it'll only cost a euro. The building in which it is housed is very grotty but don't let it put you off. It's a bit touristy but it's lots of fun and open until all hours. For eating during the day take a taxi to the Mercado del Puerto (five mins from hotel). It's got loads of nice restaurants and a fun atmosphere especially on a Saturday afternoon. However DO NOT go there at night. Nothing's open and it's not safe.
