Montevideo Although I was there on business, my wife accompanied me this time and we spent a couple of extra days exploring. The best part of Uruguay is that it is a large country with a small population.The beaches are uncrowded and there are literally miles and miles of them, along the River Plate and also along the Atlantic. There is a beuatiful Portugeuse colonial town, caleld Colonia, not far from the city, also Punte del Este has some of the best casinos in Latin America as well the most oxygen-rich air.Montevideo has wonderful museums, an opera house, four good universities, great restauarants and very amiable people. What we liked best about the country was the tranquility and the courtesy of the people. Because there is a sizable retired population of Uruguans, the country is also very senior-friendly. The roads and highways are well-maintained and mdoern. Local streets have crosswalks which drivers honor--unlike so many other countries where the pedestrian is at risk.
