Top Local Tips for Urubamba

Be sure to add time for the Sacred Valley in your itinerary The Sacred Valley is a destination in itself and should be visited for at least 3 days. The town of Ollantaytambo is beautiful and very authentic, serene and culturally interesting. That alone, should take a full day. And, the fortress is very worthwhile as well as the small and very informative museum in town. Then, a visit of the magnificent ruins of Pisac, the salt fields of Maras and the village of Urubamba will take another whole day. Take time to enjoy the beauty of the area and the wonderful people who live there. Go to the local restaurants , take time to sit in the plaza and just watch life go by ! Ollantaytambo is just a 1 and 1/2 hour train ride to Aguas Calientes( the town at the base of Machu Picchu) and more convenient than from Cusco, which is larger and touristy. Very worthwhile !!

Machu Picchu Train Access A good idea is to take a day trip to Ollaytantambo and spend the night here en route to Machu Picchu. The train leaves Ollaytantambo at 8:30 a.m. instead of 6:05 a.m. from Cusco.

Altitude The main Inca ruin in town requires climbing steep steps with no hand railing. The view from the top was worth it, though.
