Top Local Tips for Lima

Safety in Lima Lima is as safe as any other capital/big city. It has its run down areas and it has its wealther districts in the south. In the Miraflores area there are plenty of police and other security personel. Getting money from an ATM is safe as most banks have an armed guard on the door and inside. The Centro area felt reasonably safe with the continued police presence also it is forbidden to hold any public rallies in the main square Plaza Mayor so there is a constant presence of armoured vehicles and armed police. There is the odd bag snatch etc but all in all if you just take a common sense approach to security - main tips if you are in a large crowd make sure you secure your personal belongings and if you are restaurants make sure you don't hang your handbags, camera bags etc on the backs of chairs.

Museum of the Inquisition Hardly mentioned anywhere, we just happened to hear about this museum from a street cop whom we asked what else there is to see nearby after viewing the changing of the guards in the main square. The place was apparently an actual interrogation and torture place.

Don't let the guide books scare you! Lima is a large city, and treat it as you would any other city! The guidebooks have a tendancy to scare us all into thinking we may get mugged or get our bags slashed! Please do not be paranoid, you will not enjoy yourself if you are worried constantly about the people that are around you! Not only that but in our experience the Peruvian people are actually lovely, they really are! However I will just say large expensive camera's and jewelly will probably attract more attention that you may like so stick to something compact if you can that can be slipped into your bag or pocket most of the time. Also just as importantly we learnt our lesson with the SUN! it can be very overcast but you WILL still burn in minutes, this is no exageration and wear plenty of sunblock! Please!
