Taxi culture in Quito Quito taxis are supposed to have meters. However, in using more than a dozen taxis in Quito, we only had one taxi driver who was willing to admit his meter was working. We were surprised at how far he transported us for only $1.04. (From the Hotel Quito to the Mariscal neighborhood.) When taxi drivers don't use meters, then you will need to learn how to negotiate prices with the driver. Before the driver moves the vehicle, ask how much it will cost to get to your destination. The driver will always quote you a number in whole dollars. You should then make a counter offer. Learn how to say in Spanish "n dollars and fifty cents." This will help you split differences during negotiations.

Water Though housekeeping puts 2 bottles of water in your room daily ( it is not recommended for Americans to drink the water or eat anything that is washed in their water) We found that 2 bottles really is not enough ( between brushing your teeth, rewashing fruit or veggies). You can ask for more water or for 18 cents a bottle you can get some in the grocery store in the mall.
