Old citry center visit the old city center also at night, nicely illuminated, many nice restaurants

Taxi Nightime Surcharge Taxis are VERY safe in Quito. The worst thing that can happen is that the drive will try to overcharge you a little. Short trips are $1.00, this is the minimum fare. During the day most use the meter, but if not you are left to use your judgement. At night, they turn off the meters and charge an extra 50 cents or $1.00. Two things you should know: First, don't ask what the fare is -- just use your judgement and pay. If they protest, work it out. Second, the night time surcharge starts at 9 pm, so if it's before 9 don't let them get away with it.

Termas, Papallacta This is a beautiful resort. If I had known about it prior to going to Quito I would have arranged to stay a night there. The setting is peaceful, beautiful and GREEN. The hot pools are clean and wonderful. The massages great and inexpensive. The Food was EXCELLENT and inexpensive. During the week it is not crowded. Great place for a romantic getaway. You can hire a taxi to take you there, wait for you for 4 hours and then take you back to Quito for $100, with up to 5 people in the car. It beats the tours that go there at over $100/person! We had massages, dinner, used the pools and lockers, and bought a hat all for $149.
