To begin with, some of the people who wrote the other reviews either work for the hotel, or do not get around much. In May, I went to visit Quito, and was going to stay at this horrible place for a week but decided to leave after one night. The description on the internet is very deceiving. There is no telephone in the rooms. They mention cable t.v., but there is only one t.v. in a gathering room, so be prepared to fight for the remote with whoever happens to be there. Even the restaurant is out of service. The staff is unfreandly and unprofessional, and this includes the owner. When I arrived, I asked the guy at the desk for information about places I wanted to visit, and he did not know much about anything. Later that day, I happened to come across the "owner" by the front entrance. In a nasty tone, she asked "Can I help you" and when I told her that I had just arrived that day, she just walked away and could not even say welcome. For the same price, I stayed at the Windsor right on Amazonas Avenue and had a great experience with them.

This hostel sucks! I stayed there for a night. They charged me $31 which is a bit high for Ecuador (I'm Ecuadorian by the way). There was a lot of noise at the reception in the night, no hot water and staff (who are supposed to be European??) were really unfriendly and incapable of apologizing for the bad service. There are other hostels on the same road that are half price and million times better!

Very beautiful hotel in the center of Quito, very close to everything (bars, restaurants, supermarkets, pharmacies, bookshops, travel agencies, bus terminal). The hotel's house is an old very beautiful house, the rooms have no luxuries, but for the price are very nice; clean and all with private bathrooms. The staff speaks english and are extremely friendly. Free Breakfast, WIFI, computer with internet and luggage room.

Top Local Tips for Quito

be carefull with taxi drivers ask locals how much the fare to a place would be before you get into a cap... when they see foreigners, they try to rip you off!!!

at night always be careful No matter where, never, never take lots of mney , or documents or valuable things at night. also be careful while sightseeing for pickpocketers, it seems tehy love tourist pockets. At least this was my experience.

Mare Nostrum This is an excellent seafood restaurant just on the outskirts of the Mariscal neighborhood. On the Sunday and Monday nights that we dined there, we were one of only two tables of diners; apparently the sprawling place fills right up on Thursdays-Saturdays when lots of tourists descend upon the place. All the seafood dishes we tried were superb: snow crab salad, sweet and smoky cajun shrimp, the "el mariscal" seafood entree with prawns, shrimp, octopus, baby calamari, clams and mussels cooked in a heavenly, punchy garlic and parsley sauce, and a rich and decadent chocolate torte. The staff are incredibly warm and friendly and the ambience is elegant but understated. Reasonably priced at $8/$12 appetizers and $15 for the "el mariscal" which is a HUGE portion.
