Cali Plaza Hotel in short:

- very very clean;
- relaxed atmosphere;
- professional, friendly and helpful staff;
- spacious room (one bedroom aparta suite);
- excellent value for price;
- friendly hotel manager;
- perfect location;
- good air-conditioning;
- room cleaned daily;
- safe hotel;
- free stable WIFI internet connection.

First time in Colombia we stayed at the Cali Plaza Hotel for a week. We decided to go for this hotel mainly because of the good reviews i found on the web. We were looking for a place close to the city centre and near restaurants and bars. As this was my first trip to Colombia i also focussed on the safety of the neighborhood.

I first contacted the manager to check for availability. He speaks english and we talked about my travel plans. He also gave me some advice on how to best get there from Cali Airport. We arrived at the hotel past midnight, check-in went smooth. As we were tired and hungry hotel staff arranged for a (good) meal from a local restaurant. I didn't have pesos with me at that time, but that wasn't a problem as hotel staff helped out.

We stayed in a one-bedroom aparta suite room 303. We found our room to be very clean. All appliances you'll need for a convenient stay are there. I would describe our room as clean and spacious in (maybe) a traditional Colombian style. There's a safe in the room. The bed was very comfortable and we did get good sleep with little noise from everything that's happening outside. The room is fully air-conditioned, with an air-conditioner in the living-room and one in the bedroom. It gets very cold if you turn them both on. Internet access was good through a WIFI access point.

The hotel is located right in the centre of a great part of Cali. Some excellent restaurants and bars within walking distance. I liked the panaderia across the street where we grabbed our breakfast every morning, good food for extremely good prices. You can easily walk to the city centre from the hotel, or just grab a cab. Hotel staff will call you a cab. Not far from the hotel you'll find a Centro Commercial called Chipichape, when in Cali you should check it out. Some nice (fast food) restaurants there like Lenos & Carbon. There is also a movie theatre and you can do some good shopping there.

The hotel is also very close to one of the main attractions of Cali, Cerro Tres Cruses. We packed a camera and water and walk from the hotel to the foot of the mountain. From there we headed uphill which was a pretty challenging climb. Afterwards we climbed back down and walked back to the hotel. Back at the hotel we found our room to be spink and span clean. Our room was cleaned every day.

The hotel is situated in a busy neighborhood and i think you will get a pretty good idea of how the people live in Cali, by talking to people and walking to the city centre. This may not be for everyone, but i like to get a feel for the city i'm visiting. I found the hotel to be an excellent 'home'-base, from where you can explore the city, or just stay close to the hotel and have a drink across the street. When in your room (303) you will get some music from the bar close to the hotel when you are sitting in the living room. Personally i like the music they were playing. Even opened the window to catch some of the 'vibe' going on outside. If you want to relax though, you can. Especially in the bedroom.

This place is a must-stay when in Cali. We will definitely book a room at this hotel when we return to Cali.

Getting around:
If your Spanish is a bit rusty i recommend calling a taxi-driver named Jorge. Jorge speaks English fluently (he used to live in the States) and knows the city. We have asked Jorge to drive us to several good restaurants, and we also asked him to bring us to the airport when we continued to Bogota. Jorge is a friendly gentleman, drives a good taxi with air-conditioner. He's a patient individual and will function as a 'city-guide' if needed. He knows the city, the do's and don'ts, good restaurants, clubs you should not miss, sight seeing etc. When in Cali i think you should at least call this guy and ask him for some advice on where to eat or go. If you ask him to pick you up and go somewhere, you will find him to be very punctual. Always on time. Ask the hotel manager for his phone number. There are very little cabdrivers that speak or understand english.

About Cali:
I found Cali to be very accessible. I expected Cali to be a very dangerous city, but i did not find myself in any dangerous situations, not once. We have walked through several areas of the city and felt relaxed. You should off course always be cautious, that goes for all large cities around the world. The people that live in this great city are very friendly. If you want to have a great night out head out to Juanchito or stick closer to the hotel and head to Menga where Salsa and Bachata are on the menu.

Room Tip: Definitely consider the one-bedroom aparta suite, excellent value for money. Apartment 303 has a living-room with a good view of the street where the action is. At the back of the apartment you'll find the bedroom where you can relax without loud music.

I recommend Cali Plaza Hotel if you are planning on visiting Cali. Is near nice coffee shops, fine dining and the bars of Sixth Avenue. The rooms are very clean and very inexpensive. Claude (owner) and his staff are the best! Rooms are clean daily and if you need anything they are there to assist you. A major plus for me, they speak English. Enjoyed my stay and will be back soon.

Cali Plaza is a Great Location for Singles and Adventurers looking for the action. It has the best location for restaurants, bars, shops and discos. I enjoyed my stay there, except one thing. A few days were great, but the weekend that I was in Cali, was the National Election for a new president (May 30, 2010). Almost everything was closed. No bars were open and no liquor was sold in the entire country. Not a great weekend to party. My friends and I visited Chipichape a popular shopping center. My favorite restaurant in Cali is El Solar, which is only 2 blocks from Cali Plaza Hotel.

Moved From Nearby Hotel To Cali Plaza.

I visited Cali years ago, before Cali Plaza Hotel was opened. I stayed
at another nearby hotel. I made reservations at this same hotel, for
this trip. When I arrived and was checking in, I did not like it the
same as before. It was not as well maintained. I had read the reviews
about Cali Plaza, it was my second choice. I moved there. It was clean
and well maintained, but even better, there were people there that
could speak English. Seemed to me that there was more activity in the
Sixth Avenue area years ago. It was a little slow the nights I was
there, but my visit was during the week days. I have no complaints
about Cali Plaza. I hope it is still good when I return.

Great Place to Stay

My husband and I visited Cali in February. Cali Plaza was a wonderful place to stay. We would definitely stay there again. The apartment we stayed in was very beautiful and made us feel like we were at home. My husband loved the 42" Flat Panel TV for the movies we watched. It is only a block and a half from El Solar a wonderful restaurant that looks like an old house, but when you enter the house it has been torn down and the restaurant looks like its in the backyard. The umbrellas and tables are situated around the yard with beautiful palm trees and banana trees decorating the restaurant. The international type menu was good but the setting made it a special memory for me and my husband . The staff at Cali Plaza Hotel was very helpful with anything we needed and was there anytime we needed them day or night. The staff spoke Spanish, but the owner Claude is American and speaks English. This was very helpful. The apartment and Hotel was very neat and clean. If your looking for nightlife Cali Plaza Hotel is right in the center of it. Cali was beautiful and a very romantic place.

Home away from Home

I am not an American Citizen but lived in USA many years, I currently live and work in Santa Marta, Colombia. I was in Cali on business. I met an American on 6th Avenue, where all the fun places are. I asked him if he knew any hotels nearby that he could recomend. I wasn't very happy with where I was staying. He said, I would probably like Cali Plaza just around the corner. It was a small nice hotel, but what made it special for me, was a taste of my old home (USA), I forgot many of the American ways of managing a business. I love Colombia, but most businesses here need to learn organization and customer service. I did not need a cell phone, because I already have one, but I thought it a great idea to give one to each guest. The guest must buy minutes, but the use of the cell phone is free. I do not know of any Colombian Hotel offering this service. I also liked the free wireless Internet; All the previous Hotels I have stayed at, charge for this service. The thing that impressed me most at Cali Plaza, was socializing with Americans, I sat and talked with them, and all they wanted was my friendship. I miss that about USA.

Cali Plaza Hotel is a great place to stay if you don't know Cali. Hang out with the other guests if you want to learn fast. I met my future wife there. I got engaged on my trip. I knew her through the Internet for over a year before I finally visited. I was concerned about Cali being a safe place. I didn't feel or see any danger like promoted on TV. I have another week here. I hope to come back another visit before my marriage. I will stay at Cali Plaza. It's nice in Cali; Many beautiful women around Cali Plaza Hotel. If you are single, you definitely should check this place out. Cali Plaza is a new and nice hotel. They furnish you with a free cell phone to carry anywhere until you checkout. You only buy pre-paid phone cards for minutes. It's a great service.

Top Local Tips for Cali

Taxis Stay in the area that you plan on being most. It was inconvient traveling long distances because of road construction and traffic.

Heavy traffic in South of the City. Stay in the North of Cali. It is more convienient and everything you need is near without traveling in traffic congestion.

getting around taxis are very cheap and fast.....but a little too fast at times..ahahahahah
