Top Local Tips for Bogota
Not a tourist city- but worth a visit This is a city of 7 million people. All seem to be on the go during day time. However taxis are cheap and you can get to a destination easily and safely In my opinion, the security issue at Bogota is overblown. I felt safer in Bogota than in the downtown section of my home town of Vancouver, Canada. In the old part of Bogota there were police every 10 feet. In the north part where there are many restaurants, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Bogota is a big city, and iIt doesn't mean you should let down your guard- but on the other hand, one does not have to be overly paranoid. Highlights to me were: the Gold Museum; the Botero art gallery; Monserrate; and the Salt Cathedral an hour north of Bogota. Bogota is tropical fruit heaven- try one of the 25 fruit juices. Likewise try Colombian cooking- particularly ajiaco. A three day visit was enough. Be sure to also visit Cartagena and San Andres island. Our vacation turned out better than we expected.
bogota Colombia, a Wonderful place I don't really have a tip about Bogota, just want to tell folks how safe it was in the cityand there are so many historical things to see in this area. Bogota has a bad name because of drug lords etc..... It is a city of over 7 million people and I would say it is as safe as walking in any city in the USA. The people of Colombia want visitors and I amhere to tell you, if you have any desire to go to Colombia, you should go. It is beautiful in Bogota, 65 all year round, green all year round and a lovely place to see! It would help if you can speak Spanish!
a great new destination Bogota is thriving and has become very safe under Pres. Uribe. Such a change from ten years ago!! I hired a private guide for four hours and he was terrific! There are good places to eat that are near the hotel (within walking distance). The food is terrific and there are many dishes that are not seen elsewhere along with many fruits that I have never seen even in neighboring Venezuela. The weather is cool due to its altitude so bring jackets, sweaters and long pants. Women tend to dress very well and shopping is terrific, especially for jewelry (emeralds, gold, silver), leather goods, woven articles like hats and bags but I had trouble finding souvenirs for young grandchildren. The residents seem to be happy, are friendly, don't seem to try to take advantage of a tourist and they have overall good manners.
