Car service by the hour is very cheap in Bogota If you have a lot of different places you'd like to see and would like to avoid public bus transportation consider having your hotel arrange hourly-billed car service for you. For about $7 US / hour you can have a chauffer driven car at your beck and call. In many cases, that actually works out to be cheaper than hailing multiple cabs in the street to say nothing of the convenience and safety -- especially if it's raining (which it does frequently in Bogota!).

Going around Bogota in Car Safer to just hire your own driver and ask them to bring you to the saltmine in Zipaquira and also around the plaza and the president's mansion (about $8 an hour around Bogota and probaby $40-50 for a day drive to Zipaquira). The monastery on top of the hill is also a very good experience and the driver can wait for you until you're done with touring and buying stuff in the numerous tourist stalls. The grilled meats are very good and just order the multi-dish plate so you can taste everything. The local chicken soup dish Ajiaco should not be missed, and as always South American corn is always good.
