The hotel offers a warm and friendly staff, a great view and a generous breakfast. The simple, modern decor is kept sparkling clean. I felt so at home there that though I generally tried to speak Spanish in Chile I often reverted to English with the receptionists and owners (a mother and daughter). I just felt very comfortable there. Everyone is very helpful. For example, they taught me to use the cooperativos, taxis that follow a regular route and take four passengers at a time for 300 pesos (a bit more than $.50 U.S.) per person.

Top Local Tips for Valparaiso

Good French Restaurant .We had an excellent and reasonably-priced prix fixe lunch at the recently opened Le Pont D'Avignon restaurant. The decor was pretty basic, but the bistro-style cooking was excellent.

make sure you know your route Make sure you know your route to your hotel ot you might go in circles for hours. The city is on hills and streets are often one way and pretty steep.

Cerro Alegre Spend a day walking around this area. Many good restaurants can be found here (particularly try to reserve a table at "Pasta e Vino" - it opens at 8:00) and several view points offer great vistas of the Bay. The Brighton B&B is also a good spot to have lunch or an afternoon snack as you tour the hill.
