Getting Around Taxis are abundant and cheap, as this a sprawling city, not lovely like Rio, but a vital, busy metropolis well worth the visit. The subway system is cheap and excellent. Carry your driver's license or a govt issued ID, necessary to get past security in office buildings with airlines offices, travel agencies and consulates. Many of these are on Avenida Paulista. For our transfer to the port of Santos (for our cruise), about an hour and a half away, we negotiated a private, airconditioned taxi for US$100.
