Top Local Tips for Sao Paulo

Amazing street market On Sunday, we headed to the Praca Liberdade, described in my guidebook as a "sprawling Asian food and crafts fair." It was no great shakes, but we continued walking north, following the crowds, and soon found ourselves in the midst of the most unusual street market I've ever seen. The streets were lined with regular shops, and the pavement was filled with vendors selling just about everything, from clothing to knickknacks to toys and crafts. On one street corner, several artists were sitting on the sidewalk and creating paintings and drawings for passersby. Most amusingly, the police would occasionally clear the street so a car could get through. When this happened, all the vendors would abruptly jump up, throw their wares into plastic garbage bags and start running down the street. It was a spectacle well worth our time and one of our more memorable moments of the trip.
