Top Local Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Make sure the meter is on! When you first land in Rio, you really have no choice about how you're going to get to your hotel. You must take a taxi. You must first navigate a guantlet of men barking out taxi offers as you leave the baggage claim area. Blow past all these hucksters and head straight for the exit. You want to deal with someone driving a Yellow taxi with a blue stripe. This will not be that easy either, because you will be swarmed by a bunch of them too, so you must have some way to pick from this bunch. Its okay to say the hotel name you want in English. Once its clear to them where you want to go, they will usually try to quote you a price. DON'T FALL FOR THIS! This their way of building a tip into the fare. Ask them "meter?" because they all know what that means. It means you're asking them to turn on the meter that already fixes their rate by law. When you say that, many of them will balk and walk away from you, but you'll find one honest guy who'll take you up on it.

Rio sights For tours, contact the concierge. Do not buy tours from people outside the hotel. Rio has the best sights in the world and the Cristo Redentor and Sugarloaf should not be missed.

Careful of the hoses at the beach We asked where the bathroom was on the beach and someone told us that the hoses that people were spraying themselves off with - you are actually supposed to "use" the bathroom as you spray yourself off. Eeww. So, when you go to the beach (beautiful beaches!) just stay away from the hose locations - I can't even imagine how this is sanitary.
