watch your credit card!!

this hotel was in an excellent position and we had a new refurbished room which was excellent all have balconiesBUT we had our card stollen from our safe and cloned, it was done on a day when we were back and forth to our room with trips/bank/ and going to the jewellers to collect rings, it happened when we were at the jewellers, we had the managment involved who used a device to check who had entered our room via the door card system, apparently it said my card had opened the door at 3.45pm, funny we were both at the jewellers leaving at 3pm and returning at 4.50pm to find the safe unlocked,management were very unhelpful and suddenly couldnt speak as much english as they had earlier?????? I would have normaly recommended this hotel as it was really nice, breakfast was basic but ok, but the staff tried to deny even our room had been cleaned on the day our card had gone, then admitted it had when we threatened them with the police.
to the previous poster, I wouldnt expect any response from the hotel, they obviously havnt done a thing to protect holidaymakers security of the rooms and who ever is doing the cards is still at large- be safe and dont stay here!

Stay Well Clear Of This Place!!!

We used our credit card for the first time in Brasil at this hotel when we checked out at about 11:00 am. By the end of the day our card had been used in Rio and other cities in supermarkets, electronic stores, etc We have sent multiple emails to the management and also called but depite everything they have never responded to us. When a hotel behaves in this manner it's just better to give it a skip as you're only asking for trouble. The aggravation was incredible. That day we had driven south to Parati and found that we couldn't use our card. VISA agreed that it was someone at the hotel and that it is likely that an employee may have even gone into our safe deposit box and made a reproduction. Apparently, this sort of crime is rife in Brasil but when a hotel and it's management can't even respond to a customer then you know the place stinks. Stay well clear of the Praia Ipanema. I will update this if the management ever has the courtesy of responding to my emails.

From a middle of England (Meriden) couple.
By English standards, a good 4* hotel. Position ideal, balcony giving beach view and could see Corcovada (balcony on side of hotel). Staff could not have been more helpful or attentive. Free and easily available beach equipment. Great view from roof terrace, roof pool therefore small. Being on the beach road clearly some road noise but what the heck, much better than if one or two blocks back from the beach.
My wife was pleased I had chosen such a good hotel. Recommend to anyone.

Overpriced

The hotel is in an excellent location and all rooms have balconies with a good view of the beach. The breakfast was also excellent. During our stay, the beach was not crowded like that in Copacabana. We had a very pleasant experience but felt that the hotel was overpriced. Towels in the room were not changed everyday. Most hotel staff could speak English and were very helpful.

A Remarkably Unfriendly Hotel

This hotel is one of the few with balconies that front onto the beach of Ipanema. The views and location are great, but come at a steep price, to be paid not only in dollars and cents, but also in having to bear the insufferably nasty staff. Service with a scowl is the order of the day, and the feeling is that the staff just hate dealing with guests. The views aside, the rooms are small and only marginally comfortable. Consider this to be a no-service, no frills hotel, with a great location and view. If you can live without the view, almost anyplace else will be a better choice.

Not bad, not great either

I just returned from 6 nights at the Praia Ipanema. The best thing about the hotel is the location, as it's right in front of the beach, and the rooms have great views. The main problem with the hotel is that the rooms are very noisy, especially on the lower floors, since you hear cars going by all night and early in the morning. Be sure to get a room on one of the higher floors, it's worth the extra money. The sound proofing is also bad inside the hotel, you hear people coming in and out of their rooms and waiting for the elevator. Although the rooms are fairly spacious and spotlessly clean, they are very plain and not at all charming. There seems to be a lack of charming boutique hotels in Rio! Hopefully that will change. All in all, we had a great trip and it's not a bad place to say, but it's not memorable either.

Not the Ritz Carlton, but not priced like it either

The hotel is basic, but it is adequate and reasonably comfortable (and quite cheap). Convenient location for everything. The balconies do make all the difference and the roof top pool, while small, never got that busy and we always found chairs.

Also, the hotel has a room in the basement where you can get towels, beach chairs and umbrellas for the day at no charge.

The staff were smiling, but indifferent - which seems to be normal for Brazil (in my limited experience).

No security problems until the last day, by which time we were too complacent. Our bag was stolen on the beach while we went into the ocean. I think we were surprised that it didn't happen before, given the reputation of the area.

Praia Ipanema - try elsewhere

Chose Ipanema over Copacabana hotels because
pf the reputation in the Copacabana beaches.
The Praia was acceptable as a hotel -- but the service
was poor and unresponsive. It's not a "grand" hotel.
- If I were visiting again, I'd stay in an equally
priced Capacabana hotel and just be careful.
- One of the real pleasures is a walk on the beach in the 8AM to 10AM period
- Copacabana is busy and safe then IF YOU DON'T CARRY VALAUABLES.
- So check the Copa hotels first.

Balconies lift it to a unique level

This hotel has balconies, 95% of hotels along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches DON’T, and this hotel has them in every room. We arrived in the dark late on a Saturday night and to walk out on the balcony the next morning was mind blowing, the sounds below and smell of the sea, the view is astounding and mesmerizing. Your right there at the buzzing beach front.You just don’t get that in an air-conditioned windowed room.

The rooms are big, clean and the location is superb. There is great restaurants and shopping walking back away from the beach, there is great night clubs nearby with no prostitutes unlike Copacabana. We stayed for a week and Ipanema is far less sleazy than Copacabana (only minutes away), this hotel is excellent value. It has a great rooftop pool and bar/cafe with the same great views. I heard many comments from other guests about how good they thought the hotel was.

It’s probably only a 4star hotel decor and facility wise but the balconies just lift it to a unique level.

It is just OK

The Hotel is just ok, not great, not bad.

Pros:
1. Clean
2. Nice shower in the bathroom
3. Location
4. Nice View of the beach
5. Nice roof deck

Cons:
1. You can hear noise from other rooms, including upstairs.
2. You are not allow to bring guests to your room (I'm a single guy, that sucks!)
3. Air conditioning doesn't work properly
4. The slowest elevator I have ever expirienced, sometimes they are just out of service.
5. Slow service (seems to be the case all over the city)
6. Small pool.

I would not stay there again but it is an ok place, I got to meet a couple of other guests and they had similar complains.

Top Local Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Travelling by taxi Travel to and from the airport and to all attractions by the yellow and blue metered taxis. They are safe and relatively cheap. Expect to pay around R$40 to R$50 to travel from the airport to Ipanema. It was around R$25 to get travel from Ipanema to Sugar Loaf and Ipanema to Lapa. Ensure that meter is running and set to the correct rate band.

Getting around Rio Use the yellow and blue taxis to get around Rio and also for your journey to and from the airport. Airport to Ipanema is around R$40. Ipanema to Sugar Loaf is around R$25. Ipanema to Copacabana is around R$10. Taxis are safe. Make sure the meter is switched on and displays the correct rate.
