Top Local Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro for Carnaval Don't be an obnoxious tourist. If you travel to a country where there are people who have no food to eat, don't be an idiot and wear diamond rings and big gold chains. Things like that get people in trouble. Be respectful of other cultures! When we went to Rio we even went to a favela with our local friend. DO NOT be obnoxious and take favela tours as if less affluent people were put on earth for your entertainment. Be empathetic or stay in your comfortable little bubble.

Grayline Tours Definetly do a city trip but don't book with Grayline. My trip had 2 guides one in the morning was like an excited hyper child all of the time, as a complete opposite the afternoon guide was so dour and pointed everything " And on this street we have the cities oldest sewage treatment plant " I just wanted them to shut up and not talk all of the time. Plus lunch was prebooked at a restaurant in Ipanema which had very bad service and bland food.

Go to Lapa for great night! Most animated area in Rio de Janeiro at night is Lapa. Two streets are nice to hang around with animated people and clubs, especially "Carioca da Gêma" (av mem do Sa) and Centro Cultural Carioca (rua do teatro, Centro)and the great "Rio Scenarium" (rua do Lavradio). Rio Scenario is the night club of Carioca with different type of music some with live music in floors arranged with lots of amazing antiques and arts objects. the place is worth just visiting, also for the architecture of the building. the atmosphere is Lapa is magic and dizzying! you will never want to leave Rio de Janeiro after!
