Top Local Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Go surfing in Rio If you want to go surf while in Brazil check out beaches in the southeast end of the Rio City after Barra. The beach names are Recreio, macumba, Prainha and Grumari. There is a hostel (Rio surf n stay) there that offers lessons in English or spanish, and they have rentals as well. Its a cool place to hang out.!!!

Rio to Buzios Don't be afraid to take a taxi from GIG to Rodoviaria Novo Rio. The radio taxi cost about R 70, just hopping one from the street is probably a bit less. Its only about a 20 min or so ride. The bus station neighborhood looks sketchy but we had no problems inside. Buy ticket in station upstairs. Have a cold drink while you wait.Take an A/C bus to Buzios for R 32. (Yes way cheaper than the taxi..you could also go with the REAL bus to Rodoviaria) Its a pleasant ride with comfortable seats, large windows and stops at a rest center w/shops and a restaurant about mid way. Taxis are waiting in Buzios if you need to get to your hotel. This is a FAR less expensive transfer than taking the private cars forR300 ++. It worked well for our family of 7 all arriving on different days/times. Also..its all a part of the experience...! Michele H.
