Excellent Excelsior

from A TripAdvisor Member
I took my girlfriend over to Rio and booked the Excelsior on the strength of some great reviews. We weren't disappointed. The hotel is right across from the beach and a minutes walk from main shopping streets. It's also handy for other tourist attractions. The rooms were a good size, the staff were very friendly, the view from the rooftop bar/pool is breathtaking and the sumptious free buffet breakfast is the best I've ever had. And to cap everything we got engaged there. We will be back.

Fabulous view

Just returned from a holiday in Brazil and Argentina. We stayed 6 nights at the Excelsior and were delighted by the hotel location, right next to The Copacabana Palace. The view from the swimming pool of the beach and bay was spectacular. The staff very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. Happy with our choice.

A Great Birthday !!!

Our stay at the Excelsior was 'Outstanding'. The 'Staff' was very professional and very accomodating to your every need. The area is also very safe. The Copacabana beach is right across the street, and walking distance from Ipenema beach. We had an ocean view room and the view was spectacular. I would highly recommend this property.

We stayed at this wonderful hotel for five nights and it is worthy of all the praise heaped upon it. It is part of the Windsor Hotel chain and it does them proud. The rooms are fresh and clean, the front line staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and it serves an exceptional breakfast buffet.

It has a wonderful roof top pool area which provides great views of the beach. It also has a little tent area across the street at the beach, which will provide you with beach chairs and towels. However, after an hour of being besieged by literally in-your-face vendors on the beach, we retreated to the roof top pool.

The staff will get you a taxi and tell the driver where you want to go. However, traffic congestion around Copacabana is often terrible. We ended up walking 10 minutes to the subway, which is an excellent system, and got to most places faster and a whole lot cheaper.

It is worthwhle exploring the Palace, right next door, which is a truly grand old place. The second floor has photos of many of the famous who have stayed there.

All in all, the Excelsior highly deserves its reputation.

Great Hotel

Perfectly situated almost mid beach in Copacabana. Elegant lobby with very friendly and courteous staff. Security keeps an eye on the elevators but they're discrete. Rooms good with more amenities than any hotel I've been to (and I've been to some great ones)...razor, toothbrush, comb, Q-tips, shoehorn, etc :why pack! They were slighly inconsistent with towels...washcloth on even days only???? and we had a large walkin shower, no tub. Rooftop pool has great views with light menu and bar, never crowded. Marked and attended area at the beach means you didn't have to bring towel and could leave your coverups and flipflops while you strolled the beach or went into the surf. There appeared to be ample chaises and on Sunday when they ran out someone from hotel brought 4 more.
Note most rooms face side street with varying amounts of partial ocean view, a few are ocean front and 2 or 3 face inwards. We were "upgraded" at check in to a partial ocean view, what we got from Expedia likely run of the house...so if you must face the ocean consider booking directly!

Breakfast buffet was plentiful and wound up having both lunch and dinner here, both very good assortment and quality.

The hotel arranged pick up upon arrival at airport for 90 Reales and gladly would pay it again but I found a trustworthy cabbie to get me back for 35 Reales on the meter which I gladly supplemented with an unexpected, greatly appreciated generous trip.

Probably as good if not better, and cheaper than the Marriott, Le Meridein or Sofitel.

Excelsior Does Not Disappoint

from happyatthebeach
My husband and I just returned from a trip to Brazil that included 4 nights at the Excelsior. We paid about $20 dollars more a night for a deluxe room and were very pleased with the accomodations. The room was much larger than the rooms we peeked into as they were being cleaned. We had a corner room with two walls of windows, allowing for excellent views of Copacabana Beach. The bathroom was large, with granite countertops and a big whirlpool tub. We've traveled around the world and would rate the deluxe oceanfront room a very good value for the money. The rooftop pool area is modest in size but peaceful and nicely maintained. The poolside menu is not overpriced and the food is really very good. What we liked about the hotel, in addition to the rooms and location, is the big breakfast buffet (included in the room rate) and the free shuttle to and from the airport. There is also a business service center offering internet access, which is convenient. There are safes in every room which we recommend you use for passports and other valuables.

For those who don't want to venture far for meals, there are several nice restaurants within two blocks. No, they're not top rated by any guidebooks (except for the Italian restaurant at the Copacabana Palace), but they do offer fresh tasty food. Some that we liked: Arab (middle eastern food), Top Beer (what else, beer and appetizers, pizza, etc) and The Trattoria (Italian).

good staff; disappointing rooms

from NashvilleVoyager
Listed as 4 stars on some sites, 31/2 on others, the Excelsior is really a 3 star hotel. The dining room, the breakfast buffet, the lobby and the interesting roof bar are very attractive. It is the rooms that disappoint, and that is mainly why you choose a hotel. The rooms are small and the wall, ceilings and floors are thin. Furniture being moved above you is as if it were in your own room. The bathroom is simple but small. The bed room is dominated by a king-sized bed, barely leaving corridor space to get to a very small table. The window overlooking the ocean is far smaller than it need be; to open it is to let in the roar of traffic from Avenida Atlantica. The extra cost of ocean front room is not worth it at all in this case.

The staff were great, going out of their way to answer tough questions. Still, one would like a concierge. Household staff and porteiros were also terrific.

But the reviews for this hotel are simply out of line -- the are far too forgiving. Try another part of Rio -- the Ipanema Towers, for example. The Copacabana is dangerous, anarchical, filled with aggressive prostitutes, importuning beggars, over-priced restaurants, polluted air and high speed traffic. Nice place to visit, but live elsewhere.

Excellent value.

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in May 2005. This is a very solid 4-star hotel that is very well maintained and looks brand new, even though it is not. The room that we stayed in was extremely clean and nicely decorated and the bathroom was spacious with a very large marble shower. Breakfast was included w/ our room and was very good. The hotel is in a convenient location in Copacabana. The rooftop pool provides an excellent view of the beach and is also a nice place to relax. And even though the travel books suggest that you do it on your own to save money, we found the front desk to be extremely helpful in booking tours for us, and the prices were very reasonable. Someone was always available at the front desk and everyone there spoke fluent English. Don't miss Corcovado, the Star of Brazil samba show, and Porcao restaurant!!

Thank you, fellow Trip Advisor members, for recommending this hotel (my travel agent had never heard of it!)
We splurged on an oceanfront room, I think on the seventh floor-- Copacabana Beach right in front of us- beautiful view of the ocean. Don't miss the sunset from the rooftop pool/lounge area. If you turn your back on the beach, the Christ statue is illuminated on the hill behind the hotel.
We had heard horror stories of the crime in Rio, and in fact the hotel hands you, upon check-in- stern warnings about walking around with cameras, jewelry, and more than a little bit of cash.
So-- we asked about escorted tours and were first suggested one of the commercial all-day bus tours. When we hesitated, the hotel staff offered to set us up with a private tour in an air-conditioned minivan with a knowledgable english-speaking native. WOW! He was great. We teamed up with another couple and split the $70 TOTAL COST for a six hour tour (plus cable car fees, etc). He was full of local insider info and was able to drive us all the way up Corcovado (you can't do that in a bus) where you take an elevator and two escalators to get to the feet of Christ. On the way down he drove us through the largest urban forest in the world--again, something you'd miss in a bus.
The hotel was very clean, very well-managed, and the buffets were fabulous.
We did hear that Ipanema beach was friendlier and more family-oriented than Copacabana, but the Excelsior is really a wonderful place to stay and you could always take a cab to the other beach. If I ever get to Rio again, I'd stay here again.

Stay here!!!

I recently stayed at the Excelsior Copacabana Hotel during the last week in March of 2005 with a friend. I literally spent over two weeks going back and forth to different sites to try to find the best price for the best hotel. I settled on the Excelsior with some reservations because it seems a little out-dated from the pictures. Although you don't go to Rio to sit up in the hotel room, I always like to have a comfortable place to retreat when I am on vacation and tired. This hotel exceeded my expectations!! I had absolutely no complaints...and I am a complainer. We paid $125 per night for a standard room that faced the city. However, the staff was more than happy to bump us up to a room with a partial ocean-view for the same price, which was more than fine. The hotel was extremely neat and clean, bathrooms were very nice and they even had turn-down service with chocolates for each pillow. The staff...first class...the buffet breakfast...more than accomodating (and I love to eat). And yes, they have bacon and eggs for us Americans!! Even the location was perfect. An 8 minute ride to Ipanema (10 Rios, tip included, via cab). Great restaurants along Copacabana Beach and just friendly, friendly people all around. They say that the Copacabana Place (right next to the Excelsior) is the place to stay...but I say the Excelsior! It really was a terrific hotel and we will more than likely stay there again!!!

Top Local Tips for Rio de Janeiro

Fabuloue Rio! Order taxis from hotel & once out of the hotel only use taxis waiting in established pick-up sites -oronly flag down newer looking (yellow) ones. Don't accept anything from anyone on the street - several scams.

Taxis For Copacabana - to and from the domestic airport runs about R$25 or slightly higher using the meter. According to locals, tipping taxi drivers is not customary as it is in the States.
