My room was large, with an in-room safe and abundant closet space. It was also clean, as was the small bathroom. The balcony looked onto a street lined with apartment houses. The room air conditioner was quiet and efficient. The complimentary breakfast was excellent. Best of all when I asked the front desk to extend my stay by half-a-day (since my flight home was leaving at 1:00am), the clerk refused my offer to pay for the extra time.

The Acapulco Copacabana sits just behind the five-star Meridien, on the border of Copacabana and Leme and one block from the beaches.

Rooms are large; four, with balconies and in-room safes, are at the ends of each story. Furnishings are comfortable, if not lavish. Bathrooms are good; showers (no baths) produce abundant hot water.

Breakfasts are lavish; other meals were not served during my isit.

I have stayed at this hotel at least 50 times over the past 10 years, and they acknowledge that I am their most frequent and longest term customer. So much for customer loyalty - I will not stay here again. They have a new house rule which prohibits hotel guests from bringing visitors to their rooms, and denied my request for an exception as their best customer. There is not a single other 2 or 3 star hotel in Rio which has this condition. So in essence, single travellers beware of this hotel! If you meet a nice girl you cannot invite her upstairs for a drink. And yes, there are many nice girls in Rio, but this hotel chooses to treat them all as if they are prostitutes. For those of us who speak Portuguese and can meet educated and attractive ladies, we should be afforded the luxury of having them as a guest if we so choose. Do not stay here if this rule is a problem for you. I should also note that the front desk staff can become very hostile if you try to bring a guest upstairs.
