taxis and buses Check websites like this to see what the going rate is for the area, then negotiate a price before you get in the taxi. We paid R$60 to go from Tiete bus terminal in Sao Paulo to the Guarulhos International airport (negotiations started at R$70). The meter was just under that when we got to the airport but I would rather go with a negotiated price than assume the driver is going to take the most direct route when the meter is running and I'm not familiar with the city. Buses are an excellent way to travel, both in the cities and between cities. They are quite inexpensive. City buses have two doors. Usually, you enter the door at the rear of the bus, pay and go through a turnstile, so if you are hauling along your luggage, go in the front door, get settled, then go to the back and pay. It is very difficult to get luggage over the turnstile. The intercity buses are air conditioned travel buses, buses on longer routes have bathrooms (avoid using!),and upholstered, reclining seats.
