Top Local Tips for La Paz

Airport Small efficient airport, almost no shopping so do in town. Taxi airport to Ritz about 20 mins if no delays. Taxis cheap all round. Traffic appears to be totally chaotic but great fun once you get used to it.There are very few cars or taxis with scratches or dents so it must be safer than you think. (In Paris or Athens, every second car is a wreck) The rules are, there are no rules, apart from give way to anything bigger than you. Rent a 4x4!.

Getting to Uyuni by plane Although it wasn't in our 2007 edition of the Lonely Planet, you can actually fly from La Paz to Cochamba and then straight onto Uyuni for less than £60 with AeroSur. The plane in Cochamba waits for the La Paz flight to arrive, so there's no need to worry about the short connection time! This saves a lot of hassle contending with Bolivian buses and the notoriously busy train. Plus the plane was an experience in itself (tiny old style propeller-powered, with leather seats and pilots in leather jackets and aviators!!)

Why to rent a car? La Paz is a very safe place to visit. Renting cars is very expensive and you might easily get lost. Besides, traffic is hellish. The very best solution is to travel by taxi, it is very cheap and the hotel staff will certainly help its guests ordering one. For short rides you will usually be charged, 0,80 to 1,00 EUR and for longer rides 1,2 to 1,8 EUR.
